Installing the Arduino IDE – macOS

Arduino themselves have a wealth of information on installing the IDE on most operating systems in the 'Getting Started' part of their website. Be sure to read through this before continuing.
To download MP3 on Mac, you must first find the MP3 source you want to download to your Mac. Press Ctrl and click the mouse button on the download link at the same time to activate a menu, which is kind of like the “right-click” feature on a Window PC to activate the context menu. 
Download the latest Arduino IDE here and click on the Mac OS X installer.
Download Driver for the Mac OS X version, named 2.2.18 (32bit) Open the driver file which you just download, and double click FTDIUSBSerialDriver104105106107.mpkg After double click, you will see an installer window. This will download the Arduino app to the Download folder. After completion move the Arduino.app to your Applications folder.
Note: If the file is downloaded as a ZIP file then double-click to uncompress. And then move the file to the Applications folder.
Download and Install the SiLabs FTDI Drivers
If using Open Energy Monitor USB to serial UART Programmer, do not follow the instructions for installing the drivers on the Arduino website. Instead download the CP210x USB to UART Bridge VCP Drivers.
Click on Download VCP (nnn KB) and this will download the needed driver to the Download folder. Note: If the file is downloaded as a ZIP file then double-click to uncompress. And then install.
Open the Mac_OSX_VCP_Driver folder and double-click Silicon Labs VCP Driver.pkg to install the drivers.
If the software is blocked a window will pop-up with instructions. Click Open System Preferences.
Open the macOS System Preferences > Security & Privacy and click Allow.
Make sure you restart the Arduino IDE after installing the drivers. Before connecting the programmer, check Tools > Port and make note of the available ports. Now connect the programmer and your module (emonTx, emonTH, etc). Go back to the main menu and select Tools > Port again. Port should be available and showing a new port. Select the port /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART. And under Tools > Board ensure Arduino/Genuino Uno is selected.
If you have a favourite text editor, you can use it instead of the built-in editor. Select File > Preferences and tick the box Use external editor. When you use an external editor, your workflow is slightly different. You must still open the sketch in the IDE, but the IDE does not open your editor - you must yourself open the sketch file in your external editor, and save the file when editing is done. Then you switch to the IDE where you can click Verify or Upload and the IDE will read the file again and then proceed to compile it (“Verify”) or compile and upload it (“Upload”).

The Arduino Integrated Development Environment (Arduino IDE) is the free software required to interact with your Arduino controller board, without the Arduino IDE you can’t program your Arduino microcontroller to do cool stuff like control a cool robot car.
Choose a device to install the Arduino IDE software on, in the example below I’ll be installing the software on a Desktop PC running Windows 7.
Download the Arduino IDE Software
Go to the Arduino IDE Download webpage & download the relevant version for your device.
The Arduino IDE software is available for Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems.
Since I’m installing on a Desktop PC running Windows 7 I downloaded the Windows Installer, for Windows XP and up with filename: arduino-1.8.5-windows.exe.
Install the Arduino IDE Software
Install the Arduino IDE software by running the downloaded file and follow the instructions. Installing the IDE software is like installing any software on a PC, lots of mouse clicking :-)
Read the Arduino License agreement and click the “I Agree” button.
Unless you have a reason to change them, keep all the Arduino IDE software components ticked and click the “Next” button.

On the next window you can choose to change the folder where the Arduino IDE software is installed, or keep the default location and click the “Install” button.
The Arduino software will start to install.
This can take sometime and you’ll be presented with various drivers to install including Arduino USB drivers and COM/LPT port drivers, I suggest you install them all.
When complete the Arduino IDE Software is ready to run.
Running the Arduino IDE Software
Attach your Arduino Microcontroller board (I’m working with an Arduino UNO clone) to your device with a USB cable.
After connecting the Arduino UNO via USB to a Desktop PC, the power light on the Arduino UNO will light up (the USB cable powers the UNO board, no need for a power supply) and you should get a “Found New Hardware” message from Windows.
Windows will attempt to install the Arduino Driver Software. Some Arduino tutorials recommend canceling Windows automatically installing the Arduino driver software and installing manually via the Device Manager. No idea why they recommend making the process more difficult?
It took a while for Windows to install the driver for my UNO, but everything worked perfectly first time and the Arduino UNO was installed on COM4.
We are almost done.

Although Windows has successfully installed the Arduino on COM4 (could be COM3 or another port) the Arduino IDE Software doesn’t automatically select the relevant serial port.

To select the correct port click “Tools”, hoverover ‘Port:”COM4 Arduino Genuino UNO”‘ and click “COM4 Arduino Genuino UNO”.

That’s it, you’ve successfully installed the Arduino IDE Software.

Feel free to confirm everything is setup correctly by going to “Tools” > “Get Board Info”.
The “Get Board Info” pop up will list information about your Arduino microcontroller board.
